REED ISLAND ROUNDERS
House Concert and Workshops Saturday, February 21, 2009 From our hosts: Diane will conduct a 4 ½ hour banjo workshop from 11:00 A.M. to 4:15 P.M. with a 45 minute break for lunch (which is included in the cost of the workshop). Diane will teach left hand technique while concentrating on right hand rhythm by teaching tunes and songs using several different traditional banjo tunings. This is an intermediate banjo workshop. The teaching method will be by “oral tradition”. No tab or written music will be used. The workshop will have something to offer no matter how advanced your playing is. The cost of the workshop is $70. Space in the workshop is limited to 10 and preregistration is strongly suggested. Betty will conduct a 4 ½ hour fiddle workshop from 11:00 A.M. to 4:15 P.M. with a 45 minute break for lunch (which is included in the cost of the workshop). Betty’s workshop will focus on rhythm, drive and phrasing through bowing and rhythm exercises, and learning a variety of tunes, drawn from West Virginia, Kentucky, and Blue Ridge styles. Betty’s favorites include Edn Hammons, Wilson Douglas, Art Stamper, J.P. Fraley, Clyde Davenport, Emmett Lundy, Melvin Wine, John Salyer, and others. They all have unique styles, some complex, some simple, and some bring a tear to your eye. But they all make ya wanna dance! Betty’s goal is to help you develop drive, texture, and feeling in your fiddling. This is an intermediate level workshop and students should be able to learn a tune by ear fairly quickly (Betty will break them down–the tunes, not the students.) The cost of the workshop is $70. Space in the workshop is limited to 10 and preregistration is strongly suggested. The Reed Island Rounders will perform in concert from 8:00 P.M. to around 10:00 P.M. The cost of the concert is $12. Most likely, there will be jamming after the concert. Workshop participants who also attend the concert are welcome to stay for a dinner between the events. The dinner is limited to 20 people and there is no cost. There are plenty of restaurants in the area as well. The Reed Island Rounders is one of our favorite bands, so don’t miss this opportunity to hear them and learn from some great contest-winning musicians. For further information, directions, or more information about or to preregister for either workshop, please contact: Bill Goldberg or Suzanne Gates (717)-259-0319 email: billandsuzanne1@verizon.net
